Intro
A breakdown of Running the Most Beautiful parkrun. Bere Island parkrun for my 40th Birthday. The Best parkrunday! by Nicola Runs. The video captures something special. Here are the highlights so you can experience this island run yourself. The full video has more route details and scenery.
Key points
- Route: Bere Island parkrun is 5 km (~3 mi) along coastal paths, through village streets, and up a gentle rise with views across the Atlantic.
- Logistics: a short ferry (~1 km) leaves from Castletown Bere, followed by a minibus transfer to the start. Budget about EUR 10 per person round trip.
- Safety and terrain: there are potholes and patches of slippery grass. Watch the uneven stone steps on the initial climb, take care on the way down, and be aware of tidal areas.
- Fueling: bring-and-share is the tradition. Pack a light snack (apples, oranges, biscuit), then refuel with coffee or tea at the clubhouse after.
- Mindset: enjoy the landscape, meet the other runners, and mark the day.
Workout example
5 km (3 mi) parkrun, adjustable pace:
- Warm-up: 5-minute easy jog around the village square, steady breathing.
- Main set, 5 km loop:
- Start (0-0.5 km): head up the gentle hill at a relaxed-to-moderate clip, watch for loose rocks.
- Mid-section (0.5-3 km): settle into a sustainable rhythm. 5 min/km (~8 min/mi) for newer runners, or 4 min/km (~6 min/mi) for speed.
- Final km: if you want to finish strong, accelerate over the last kilometer, around 30 seconds quicker than your average.
- Cool-down: 3-minute walk or very light jog back to the clubhouse, then a drink and birthday cake.
- Post-run: hydrate and relax.
Tip: use the Pacing app to set your target minutes per km (or mile) and let it alert you when you’re off pace.
