Intro: Interested in a month-long climbing challenge? Aravaipa Running created “Merry Vertmas Climbing Challenge!” and it’s worth your attention. Here’s what you need to get started. Watch the full video for more.
Key points:
- 25 days starting December 1st. The challenge tracks vertical feet (not miles) from outdoor climbs and treadmill sessions.
- Two ways to compete: Vert Real (outdoor only) and Vert Virtual (outdoor or treadmill). Treadmill totals climb faster since there’s no downhill.
- Log climbs through Out and Back (outandback.com). Connect Strava or Garmin, or upload a TCX file from your treadmill.
- Badges at various milestones: 10,000 ft (Steep Squad), 29,029 ft (Everest), 33,000 ft (Hard Rock), 70,000 ft (Barclay), 138,000 ft (Marathon of Climb), up to 300,000 ft.
- Daily activities drive engagement: Time to Climb (an hour’s worth of elevation), Twin Peaks (two climbs in one day), Summit Selfies x3 (three peaks, share photos).
Workout example:
- Day 1, Time to Climb: aim for an hour of climbing, roughly 2,000 feet. Log via Strava or Out and Back.
- Days 2-3, Twin Peaks: two climbs daily, each around 1,500 feet. About 3,000 feet across both days.
- Days 4-5, Summit Selfies x3: pick three local peaks, climb each, take a photo, record the vertical.
These targets are a starting point. Adjust to your fitness and use the Pacing app for custom feet-per-minute goals.
Closing note: start the Merry Vertmas Challenge whenever you’re ready. The Pacing app handles custom distances and paces. Watch the full video for more details and prizes.
